A single person living alone in a Japanese city typically spends ¥160,000 to ¥220,000 a month including rent. Rent is by far the largest item and the one that varies most: the same apartment can cost ¥130,000 in central Tokyo, ¥80,000 in Osaka and ¥55,000 in a regional city.
Outside rent, the pattern is fairly stable across the country. Food runs ¥35,000 to ¥45,000 for someone who cooks most days, utilities ¥10,000 to ¥15,000 with sharp seasonal swings, and a phone plus home internet ¥7,000 to ¥12,000. Discount mobile carriers can cut the phone bill to under ¥2,000.
Utilities are worth planning for because they are not steady. Heating in January and cooling in August can each add ¥5,000 to ¥10,000 a month over the spring baseline, and older buildings with poor insulation cost noticeably more to heat.
